I Did Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections for Glowing Skin & Hair Scalp Loss. Was It Worth It? [Warning: May Contain Blood!]

By Grace Myu - September 02, 2022

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections aka Vampire Facial have been all the rage, especially when Kim Kardashian posted a blood-drenched selfie in 2013. Since then, many have been curious and I have seen many personal friends also going for it in Malaysia.

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a substance that’s thought to promote healing when injected.

Plasma is a component of your blood that contains special “factors,” or proteins, that help your blood to clot. It also contains proteins that support cell growth. Researchers have produced PRP by isolating plasma from blood and concentrating it.

The idea is that injecting PRP into damaged tissues will stimulate your body to grow new, healthy cells and promote healing. Because the tissue growth factors are more concentrated in the prepared growth injections, researchers think the body’s tissues may heal faster.

The treatment hasn’t been definitively proven. It also hasn’t been approved as a treatment by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, famous athletes have been known to use these injections to help heal injuries.

Beverly Bangsar Clinic, the aesthetic clinic I frequent to - offers this very procedure and I was keen to test it myself. Aside from the face, I was told that PRP could also be injected into the scalp (since the scalp is also an extension of your skin) to stimulate new hair growth. I had a few bald areas that needed treatment thus my doctor, Dr Jinly recommended me to try it.

The PRP Process

It starts with a face cleanse then numb cream about 15-20 minutes to make the treatment more bearable. Since there will be multiple injections into the treatment area (in this case, my face and scalp), thus the duration may take longer as it is multiple treatment areas. The numb cream cannot be applied onto the scalp, so if you were to proceed with PRP on the scalp, you may need to have a higher pain threshold to tolerate the treatment.

A cling wrap layer is applied to ensure the numb cream stays put and not dry up quickly during waiting period.

After numb cream is applied, Dr Jinly drew blood from my body (usually she takes it from my elbow inner fold where the vein is visible) to centrifuge the blood using a 'soft' spin in a machine. About 20ml (2 vials) is taken for the coverage of a full face.

The actual injection was painless since the areas were numb. Dr Jinly uses an injection machine that has multiple needles for my face and she proceed to use a needle for my scalp.

This is how my face looks right after PRP.

The Recovery Period

The red dots will go away after a few days and I was allowed to wear makeup right after because I was attending an event). The redness was not noticeable and my skin healed very quickly. The other visible effect was the after-glow of the treatment which lasted for weeks! This glow, lasted longer than Hollywood Laser Peel - however this is a personal experience and it may differ between individuals.

PRP is pricier than Hollywood Laser Peel but I would def opt for this if there was an impending life event or trip that will last a week or more. It is really worth the investment.

My Scalp Progress

As mentioned in the beginning of this post, I was experincing severe hair loss and was having spot balding on the frontal area of my scalp. This was my scalp in Jan 2022.

Notice that my hairline on the front left side was thinning? I guess I can attribute it to years of hair parting on that side thus the bald spots were noticeable.

This is my hairline in August 2022. It has significantly improved since my PRP treatment in July 2022. PRP requires multiple treatments to see significant results but I'm glad I can see mine in just a single session! On top of PRP, I do use hair tonic as well to speed up the healing process.

My Final Thoughts

As a firm believer of prevention is better than cure, I'm a firm believer that aesthetic facials (on top of an active lifestyle) are what helps me preserve my youth. To me, aesthetic facials are a grade above traditional facials AND worth the extra money because the machines used can penetrate into the deepest layer of the skin and the results are long lasting.

If you are contemplating between PRP and Hollywood Laser Peel - here are my thoughts:

PRP
If you're ready to splurge for a big event (like a wedding!), please do yourself a favor and do this at least a week before your big day. You'll be very happy with this investment as it will show in your wedding photos (and these photos will last for life)! You can split 2 vials for your face and also scalp

😉

Hollywood Laser Peel
If you are new to aesthetic facials, try this! You can get an instant glow for a week and can see long lasting results with regular treatments.

I enjoy telling people my age because I always get a huge reaction whenever I tell I am nearing my mid 30's!
