The Waxing Expert: Bubble Gum Wax

By Grace Myu - April 24, 2015

My blogging journey has opened up plenty of opportunities to try out many things for the first time, and one of them is a LIFE CHANGING event, being....

B R A Z I L I A N   I P L

In January, a group of beauty bloggers (me included) were invited to go on a beautifying journey of a lifetime -- we could choose either a full leg OR brazilian IPL service, courtesy of Bubble Gum Wax at Casa Tropicana -- to commemorate their second outlet opening! (FYI BBGW first outlet is in Plaza Damas, Sri Hartamas)

We were split into two sessions because BBGW can only take so many customers at one time.

So this is the view from outside BBGW from the carpark at Casa Tropicana. Interestingly, Casa Tropicana is an apartment location but they have various beauty salons and convenience stores within the venue to serve its residents and one of its tenants is BBGW!
(BBGW is located on the First Floor, just above 7-Eleven and Bianco Hair Salon.)

The alley leading to BBGW on First Floor.

Bubble Gum Wax outlet has a Brooklyn brick wall interior which reflects a somewhat fashionable forefront. It's just really cool to use it as a OOTD pic background, especially in natural lighting! In addition, they used a lot of brown paper for signage, which adds on to the cool hipster factor.

The peeps at BBGW were so accommodating that they prepared for us bloggers plenty of finger food with lots of branding! Check out those cupcakes and tarts bearing their "B" logo and also bikini shaped cookies!

Since I have never done any waxing or IPL or that sort at my..... let's call it octopussy.... I felt like I needed to try it at least once in my life, else I could never be able to claim that I, so-called-self-proclaimed-beauty-blogger have tried every beauty trick/gadget/method there is in the market.

Is there anything I need to do or know before coming for my treatment?

A few advises you should keep in mind:
  1. If you are menstruating, it is NOT recommended to have your Brazilian done as the skin around that area is very sensitive, thus more painful during the service. And for hygiene purposes, it is also NOT advisable to do a Brazilian wax. It is best to wait for about 3 - 5 days before or after your menstrual cycle.
  2. If you are pregnant, please check with your doctor prior to coming for a Brazilian wax. We generally DO NOT do Brazilian waxing for customers still in their first trimester.
  3. If you have just delivered, please wait for 3 months after a natural delivery or 6 months after a caesarean delivery before coming for a Brazilian wax.
  4. If you have undergone any form of surgery, please wait for 6 months before coming to wax said body part.
  5. If you have been shaving, please stop shaving at least 2 - 3 weeks prior to your waxing appointment.
  6. If you have sensitive skin, allergic reaction to food, lotion application, or medication, and/or consuming any hormone supplement, please let us know and we will advise you accordingly.

So since yours truly was having her menses at that moment, she had to come back another week to book her never-been-waxed octopussy (of course she tried to self-shave/pluck/trim whenever she can!) for its very first virgin presentation to Wax Experts.

So this is me, 10 days after the Mini Bloggers Gathering --

`*:;,.★ ~☆・:.,;* MY BRAZILIAN IPL EXPERIENCE `*:;,.★ ~☆・:.,;*

At BBGW, there are two types of Brazilian methods: waxing and IPL. The owner, which happens to be in that very outlet that day suggested me to get an IPL since it's my first time doing a Brazilian. She told me it would be less painful than waxing (Thank You Jesus!) and it is a permanent hair reduction (double yay!).

Being a BRAZILIAN VIRGIN, I am petrified at the thought of showing octopussy to other people. Like hello, what if octopussy looks super weird? What if octopussy decides to stink that day? Because Waxperts (wax expert) have seen 101 bikini areas and I am embarrassed to think that mine is the worst of the lot. Plenty of doubts and fears came to mind, but I decided to put on a brave front to get it done, once and for all.

I went to the service room and was told to get changed. I was given a pair of sunglasses to protect my eyes from the light pulses.

The first position was to lie on my stomach as the Waxpert asked me to start from behind HOHOHO. (now please remove all nasty thoughts!) Before starting, she applied generous amount of baby powder all over octopussy until everything turned white. She used a total of 3, THREE SHAVERS to shave everything. Wendy, my Waxpert of the day told me that shavers are cheap so they can use however many they needed to as BBGW uses only SHARP razors and they don't skimp on quality. I'm very impressed that there are still beauty salons such as BBGW that withhold THIS STANDARD of beauty!!!
ฅ( ͒ᵕ̳◡ᵕ̳ ͒)。o○

After shaving and cleaning octopussy thoroughly, now comes the ZAPPING part. The scariest part because I don't know how zapping would feel on my innermost sensitive area! Wendy kept talking to calm my nerves and she preps me by telling me each time she is going to zap. She also tells me which part of octopussy would hurt more so that I can mentally prepare myself for the pain threshold.

Throughout the whole service, I was talking and asking a lot of questions to Wendy, to calm my nerves. I was asking about the different types of services offered at BBGW to how long she worked there to where she stayed, HAHAHAHA. Now that I am writing about it, I feel a bit silly because I was asking nonsensical questions but yet she obliged to answer me EVERYTHING!! lol

Apparently there is a difference between Soft Wax and Hard Wax, too.

Soft Wax: Soft wax is usually used to remove small, fine hair, like hair on your legs, arms and face. You know those waxing that uses paper/cloth to remove the hair in the movies, yup, that’s soft wax! Usually for Brazilian waxing, the soft wax is used to remove all the finer hair at the top part, near the top of your panty line basically. Or if you have done Brazilian waxing before, your vajajay usually grow out finer hair, so soft wax can be used to remove them. Its light yellow in colour, and apparently, this wax hurts a lot more that the hard wax!

Hard Wax: Hard wax is something I’ve never seen before, and it is actually used to remove coarse, thick hair, like the hair down under. LOL. The wax is reddish orange in colour. This wax is usually used for wax virgins, since it hurts less, and wax virgins usually have coarser hair! The method of using this wax is a little different as well, what they do is that put the wax on your skin, pat the wax till it dries and hardens, that usually takes 5-10 seconds, and they pull the wax off just like that, with their hands!

`*:;,.★ ~☆・:.,;* BRAZILIAN IPL AFTERMATH `*:;,.★ ~☆・:.,;*

I FELT LIKE I WAS READY TO EXPOSE OCTOPUSSY TO THE WORLD!

The process took about 30 minutes including consultation time. The pain level was rather bearable, perhaps because I have done IPL on my pits and upper lips previously. It was comforting to know that I am placed in the hands of experts; people that will make me feel at ease and no judgement being made when I enter the service room.

True to their motto, they give the highest quality of service and allow customers to feel empowered after their Brazilian experience!

With owner Jesslyn. She's not yet 30, which makes her a successful young entrepreneur!

Oh btw, if you plan to bring your boyfriend or husband along, they do offer services for males too! They call it BOYzilian and I was totally gushing about it because I felt it was such a good play on words! BBGW will offer a male specialist to administer for male patrons. All Waxperts are professionals, so be rest assured that you will be in good hands.

This is the price menu, if you are wondering. Click to enlarge.

BBGW do have their own line of products for After Care and I got the Soothing Moisturizing Gel to be used after shower. Hygience Wipe is used something like a Wet Tissue, but this is specially made for octopussy :)

  3. HYe! I was doing some research about waxing at Bubble Gum since i saw a first timer promotion of RM29 and i stumble upon your blog post. I am octopussy too hahaah never wax my vajayjay, only shaved it. So i understand about showing my vajayjay to a stranger and like u said, what if it looks horrible and stinks! xD. Since u bravely put up a front, i find a little courage in me to try. Anyway, how long does it take for the new hair to starts growing back after u did your session?

    1. Hi Syima! Congrats on finally deciding to take the first step by researching on the company and user experience! I hope you find this piece of information useful to your decision making :)

New hair generally grows about few days (you can feel that sharp pokey feeling!) and the hair will shed by itself after two weeks. Well that's for me and it may vary from person to person. I recommend you give them a call to get more accurate info :)

      All the best hun!
